Why are we Obsessed with Minerals?!
I love August. It feels like a month where we are both slowing down to enjoy the last couple weeks of Summer and at the same time starting to mentally prepare for the Fall to enter the scene. I like to think of it as a great month to focus on replenishment especially when it comes to minerals!
So we put together some mineral reminders and creative resources to help get you all excited about replenishing your minerals this August!
Let’s refresh on why we are obsessed with minerals…
Minerals and electrolytes are the spark plugs to your body. They drive 1000’s of cellular processes, make energy, support metabolism, make & signal hormones, make digestive secretions and support stress resilience. Think of them as keeping the electricity on in the body. The big three minerals are sodium, potassium and magnesium.
What do they do in the body?
Sodium: regulates blood pressure, supports stomach acid production, and maintains fluid balance.
Potassium: regulates blood pressure, supports blood sugar, and maintains fluid balance.
Magnesium: supports muscle relaxation, detoxification and digestive function. We also need this to properly absorb Vitamin D!
…And these are just the highlights!
Optimal mineral status requires repletion through food, beverages and sometimes supplements to meet those daily requirements - especially if you are experiencing more chronic symptoms such as constipation, heartburn, fatigue, sleep disruptions and even blood sugar challenges. Mineral support is one of the first areas we focus on with our clients because it is critical to healing, stress resilience and restoring energy and vitality in the body!
Optimal hydration is fundamental to building digestive secretions, priming microbiome and optimizing motility - and this starts with water intake throughout the day. The general goal is to aim for consuming half of your bodyweight in ounces of water everyday.
We’ve put together our favorite products including water bottles, kitchen gadgets and supplement powders to achieve optimal hydration in our Above Health Nutrition wellness shop - check it out HERE! Stay tuned this month for our three favorite ways to consume more minerals each day!
Our number one way of consuming optimal minerals is through adding in 1-2 mineral rich drinks each day. We do get minerals and electrolytes from foods, especially fruits, vegetables, seafood, organ meats, nuts and seeds BUT our bodies often have a higher demand for minerals than our modern-day diet supplies. This is especially so if you are experiencing stress, physical movement or living in a hot environment which is pertinent for almost all of us in August!
In a mineral rich drink, we combine a whole foods source of potassium, a source of vitamin C and a pinch of sodium - this combination is nourishing to the adrenals and also known as an adrenal mocktail. Our Mineral Guide includes two mineral rich drink recipes you can start to incorporate into your day. Juicing to Increase Your Minerals!
Juicing is one of our favorite ways to incorporate more colorful plants into the diet which provide anti-inflammatory compounds, boost minerals, and provide polyphenols to feed beneficial gut bacteria! Juicing is a wonderful way to incorporate more mineral rich beverages into your day but are not used as a meal replacement.
If you follow us on social media, you have definitely seen my green juice mornings with my favorite juicer NamaWell. If you’re interested in getting on the juicing train - use our code Abovehealth10 for 10% off at Nama. And check out two of our yummy Nama recipes in the Mineral Guide.
We know it can be challenging to make sure your kids are getting all of the nutrients and minerals they need to thrive. A fun way to bump up the minerals and antioxidants in their diet is to get creative with the presentation and delivery.
Minerals are especially important if your child is frequently getting sick, experiencing loose stools or constipation, or is very active. Our Mineral Guide (**download and link to “Mineral Guide” from That Clean Life) has two of our favorite mineral rich popsicle recipes that are full of antioxidants, minerals and fiber. This is a refreshing way to consume minerals for little ones and adults as well!
